Helping Hands Dog Rescue
Q. Can I stay with my dog while it is being groomed?
A. Unfortunately not. I have found that dogs can become stressed, anxious, playful and aggressive if their owner is around whilst they are being groomed. I provide each dog with a calm environment and even nervous dogs are calmer in a grooming environment when the owner is not around. Customers are more than welcome to hang around the Garden Centre, where there is a the Green Bean Coffee Shop, so they are not far away for extra peace of mind.
Q. How often should I have my dog groomed?
A.There are varied opinions on the answer to this question. I personally believe it is down to the owner’s choice but I would recommend to consider the following,
The condition of the dog’s coat. If, for whatever reason, you don’t brush your dog regularly, ie, daily or weekly, the coat will become knotted and then matted. This will pull at the dog’s skin and make it itchy, can prevent the owner from seeing fleas and mites or skin conditions etc. So, regular grooming is imperitive for long haired breeds to stay healthy.
The dead undercoat. The grooming process removes all of the dead undercoat, which can become smelly and matted. The dog will feel much more comfortable when the hair has been removed.
Smell and stains. Dogs can become smelly and stained and only regular bathing can prevent this. I, personally, groom my own dogs every month because they love to roll, play fight in mud, dig and swim in the pond in the summer so they generally stink otherwise.
Too often! I would avoid bathing a dog more than once a month as this can sometimes remove the acid mantel, which can cause things like itchy skin, and a dull, brittle coat and can leave the skin susceptible to micro-organisms. If your dog needs a ‘freshen up’ more often than monthly, I would recommend brushing and grooming wipes for in between professional grooms.
